When was the last time you truly felt fired up about your life? You know, when you couldn’t wait to get out of bed and start your day or you felt totally confident about the path you’re walking.

It’s a great feeling to have such a sense of purpose. It’s something that guides all your thoughts and actions to create a positive, powerful way of living. But, sometimes we need a little motivation to help us keep going!

This is completely understandable. Motivation gives you the extra push when nothing else can, which is why it’s good to motivate yourself and others, too.

1. Write Yourself Notes of Encouragement

The note(s) of encouragement you write today may be just what you need tomorrow. It’s not like you can predict the future or anything, but, there’s value in reminding yourself “you are loved” or “you are worthy.”

  • You are enough
  • You deserve the best
  • The best is yet to come

Whether you write them directly to yourself or as a simple reminder, these notes can do more to motivate you than you might think.

2. Practice Positive Self-Talk

Instead of writing down every good thing you have to say, say a few words of encouragement to yourself in the mirror every morning. Positive self-talk might sound a bit silly at first, but it does wonders for the rest of your day.

All you have to do is spend a minute or two giving yourself a little pep talk. You can focus it on what you have going on that same day or make it a bit more general.

Try to incorporate one of your goals or your purpose, though. This will make your personal motivation much easier to encourage throughout the rest of the day.

3. Set SMART Goals

Speaking of goals, maybe you need to reevaluate what your goals even are. Is it a vague idea you keep wandering towards, or something with a plan? The latter is always better.

To help you improve at goal-setting, try the SMART technique. SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. It helps you turn one big goal into a reasonable task to achieve within a certain amount of time.

4. Get up Early

Here’s one that may not have you thrilled at first, but it does work. When you get up early, you’re able to collect your thoughts and center yourself before the rest of the day starts.

Instead of running out the door to get to work, you can hang out and read a book or perhaps meditate a little bit. There’s no right or wrong about how you use this time, so long as you’re not laying in bed.

Wake up and get moving. Take time to turn on your mind or energize your body and watch how your overall sense of motivation heightens.

5. Exercise Often

If you’re not the 5 A.M. workout kind of person, still try to workout at some other part of the day. Exercise might seem like it’s only for strong muscles and a good physique, but it has many mental benefits, too.

A regular workout schedule keeps your mind sharp and focused. It cuts out the distractions of life and helps you see things clearly. Before you know it, your workouts result in a better sense of self and strong motivation, as well as a healthy body.

6. Stay Positive

Whether you’re in the gym every day or going home to your family right after work each night, you have to stay positive. There’s no point in taking on personal motivational tools if you’re doing it with a bad attitude.

This won’t get you very far, and it definitely won’t help you in motivating others. You have to always find the good in a situation even when it seems like there’s no silver lining at all.

There’s always something to be thankful for and a little bit of good to take away. Focus on finding it. This provides you with a better sense of trust and peace of mind, which support the process of motivating yourself.

7. Find a Saying that Sticks

Try to find a saying that helps you stay positive. This could be anything from a famous quote to a line in a song to a religious saying. It doesn’t really matter where you find it so long as it provides motivational value to you.

Keep this quote near and dear. Find comfort in it when times get tough and use it to fuel your fire when you need a little extra push in the morning. It can even come in handy when you feel on top of the word and 100% motivated.

8. Talk About Your Passion

Quotes and sayings are great and all, but at some point, you have to use your own words. This is especially true when trying to motivate others but it also applies to you.

Make an effort to voice the passionate thoughts floating around your mind. Talk about what’s in your heart and what your why is. Your “why” is the reason for doing everything you do – it’s kind of like a goal with a more long-term, deeper meaning.

9. Ask for and Give Feedback

As you’re talking about your passion and the passions of others, take a second to ask for feedback. Sometimes, we get too focused on our own goal or purpose, we forget there might be a better approach available.

Feedback helps you see what the best way of doing something is. It gives you a handful of options with pros and cons to choose from. Not to mention, it might be just what you need to hear to get back on track if your motivation has been lowering.

Remember this tool goes both ways. When someone offers you feedback, try to give a little bit back to them as well.

10. Support the People Around You

Feedback is one piece of support, but there’s much more you can do to lift up those around you. Go to your friend’s art show or dance recital. Ask your parents about how they’re doing on their second degree or the Master’s diploma they’re working towards.

Whatever your friends and family are up to, be there with them. This may have to be in spirit rather than in person, but a good thought still does plenty to keep them motivated on their journey.

Plus, when you see how much you’re able to give back and motivate others, you end up giving yourself a little bit of motivation as well.
